Blicher Hemmer Gadd
Get That Motor Runnin’
Blicher Hemmer Gadd is a modern jazz trio made up of Danish saxophonist Michael Blicher and Hammond Organ wizard Dan Hemmer – joined by American living legend and drumming superstar across jazz and pop and all shades in-between, Mr. Steve Gadd.
What might have started as a quick session, a one-off, has now spawned three albums across a half-decade of sporadic touring and recording. More importantly there is, instantly, a band feel to the work these three offer; a distinct sound. And it’s a warm, welcoming sound too.
Get That Motor Runnin’ is the latest effort from the Blicher Hemmer Gadd trio and it sticks to the knitting of previous releases, the sax and Hammond taking turns to dish the melody and solos, all three instruments getting a chance to dance, Gadd doing his thing in a very low-key way in the background, in support.
We kick off with the title track, a live track from a previous tour. It’s got a late Booker T & The M.G’s vibes. Sunny. That’s even more overtly explored on the first studio cut here, Mr. T, ahead of the lovely ballad – and album centerpiece – The Moment She Falls Asleep. I’m reminded of some of Charlie Hunter’s quartet work here and damn if Gadd doesn’t have the best-recorded crosstick!
Samba de Menino – another live offering – plays to Gadd’s great skill with Latin jazz and some tasty brushwork frames a breathy, Rollins-esque bit of sax work from Blicher.
The First One To Know features a guest vocal from the honey-voiced journeyman, Paul Carrack. Hemmer’s Hammond pours creamy, dreamy soul and gospel tones all down the walls of this tune.
And then another live track to finish. Roll. It’s a fun wee stomper – feels like mid-70s Bob James if interpreted by Reese Wynans.
I loved this trio’s previous record, Omara, and this is a welcome return. Fire it up along with the last of the summer BBQs and enjoy the great musicianship and easy, soulful vibes as swirls of organ and sax dance around each other, all cut and measured by one of the very drummers to ever sit on the stool.
