Bic Runga’s classic debut album, Drive turned 20 last month. I still have my original CD copy, signed by Runga when she visited the music store I had, at that time, just started working in – I’d been there a matter of just a few weeks. And she was a big, important star on the rise. I’d seen her solo opening set for the Finn Brothers, and then seen her again on the tour when Drive was released.
She was a big deal. And would go on to become an even bigger deal across a couple of brilliant follow-up albums. And every time – even now – when she performs live it’s a small handful of those songs from Drive that pack the biggest punch.
So in October and early November (Christchurch’s Isaac Theatre Royal, Oct 20, Auckland’s The Civic, Nov 2 and Wellington’s Opera House, Nov 3) Runga will perform Drive in its entirety – with a second sit of ‘Hits’ from the other albums.
