Crystal Lake Tapes vol. 1
Drummer, producer, remixer and – crucially – horror movie fanatic, Ben Living takes snippets from the theme tunes and dialogue from the movies he loves and bends them to fit into new shapes; basically cut’n’paste instrumental hip-hop. Previously he took the music and dialogue from the Halloween series and here he does much the same (but makes newer writhing shapes) with snippets from the Friday The 13th films.
Again, I think of DJ Spooky and Scanner, as with his Haddonfield Recordings, but also our own Alphabethead and even some RJD2 vibes this time around.
The whole thing is an art-piece made with love and madness, equal doses no doubt. An exhilarating trip for horror-film junkies, as you spot the lines and laugh at the recontextualisation. Particularly, here, the opening track (Unlucky Number) riffing on how a weekend might start.
From there we get woozy, broken-beat swagger (The Mask) and clever sound-design collages (The Tunnel) with throwbacks to cinematic hip-hop feels (Upgrade) and then to finish, the brilliant, disco-infused theme music from Friday The 13th 3D is here “chopped and screwed” to a slow-paste treacle-crawl (4D) which I could listen to on a loop for days.
Available via his Bandcamp on limited CD or cassette tape as well as the instant download. Get in amongst it. Too clever. Too much fun.
