Here two great MCs combine their talents across a free EP that features the production work of Optiks, Blockhead, DJ Spinna and Alex “Apex” Gale. It’s reminiscent of the Madlib/MF Doom collaborations, great rappers at the top of their game so assured.
The opener, Vertigo, plays out like an offcut from MF Doom’s MM…Food? album before Katz shows the humour in both the delivery and writing, the Madlib connection is still there though, reminiscent of some of the Quasimoto delivery this time around.
Environmental Studies features a smoky-club piano waft – and the sort of bassline-sampling that recalls peak-game De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest.
So Strange Here feels like it could come from a Moby or Kid Loco record as much as any hip-hop, though the verses roll out with a Roots-like intensity and feel.
And then the closer is Get A Dog, the most feisty and energetic and intense of the songs here.
This is a fun virtuoso effort; amazing MCs and great beats/production. It all seems so effortless, so simple. It’s a reminder of the class from Homeboy Sandman and Aesop Rock.
