Adrian Belew, Mr. Music Head (1989)
I think I started buying Adrian Belew records before I ever really started listening to them – before I really knew anything much about his music; the music of his solo career that is. You see there’s work with Frank Zappa and David Bowie and Talking Heads – and that’s just a few key moments. And all of that is before he joins King Crimson. But all of that is reason enough – or was reason enough for me anyway – to want to find out what else he does; what he’s up to when he’s on his own. This is one of my favourite of Belew’s solo albums – of the ones I know (I only have a few). I love his guitar playing. His phrasing. The weirdness. And then how he can – almost suddenly – play so straight. I dig his songwriting too. There’s a lot of gems on his solo discs. He’s one talented chap.
Sample Track: Bad Days
