V/A, The Jazz Story Volume 3 (1964)
I think it’s a 5-volume set, but I saw the first four in a store on a day and bought them all then and there. And I haven’t looked for volume 5 – I wonder if they were all sold together originally? Anyway, good set of second-handers to find, reminding me of the jazz and blues comps mum bought when I was young – and what a good intro they were to worlds of music that seemed so mythical and magical (and musical) as a child. And still do really…still that magic is there, certainly. This has plenty of things I’d already heard but there’s one or two acts/artists I don’t have represented on vinyl anywhere else in the collection. And some good song-selections. Good rainy-day music for me, these days. Not jazz in general, I mean this particular album. This and the other volumes. Nice, slightly mopey, good, lazy-day, locked-inside sort of music. Probably not selling it to anyone but myself. But that’s okay, not really in the business of sellin’ it.
Sample Track: Sophisticated Lady (Duke Ellington)
