Cave Circles, My Heart Is A Beating Drum (2017)
Cave Circles is one of many aliases used by Wellington-based drummer/producer/DJ Riki Gooch – and this 12” is just one of his latest releases. I spoke with Riki at length for my podcast earlier this year – it’s a great listen, he’s done so much and his story is interesting; I’m convinced he’s something of a musical genius. I’m glad to call him a friend too – I’ve loved having music-based conversations with him – and to then hear his music as a type of ‘musical conversation’. Here you’ll hear synth stabs and little techno flourishes, broken-beat late-night reveries gone awry. (Actually Nick Bollinger puts it well in his review/recap here). Riki turned up at my place and gifted me a copy of this EP – signed it for me too. You can order the vinyl or buy the Mp3s or listen here. And you should. It’s terrific. As is Riki Gooch and most of the music he makes or is involved in. Another cool thing with this release was the hand-made covers; each one different. A limited edition set, unique finished artwork for each.
