Richard Thompson, Small Town Romance – Live/Solo In New York (1984)
For all that I love Richard Thompson I don’t own a lot of his material on vinyl – perhaps that’s because I’m still going through his albums (on CD). I don’t know. I should buy more I guess, I really do love his playing, his songs…but I was certainly happy to find this recently. I used to have the CD but lost it a while back and so to hear this again was a real treat. To have it. These songs – fragile, shaky in voice sometimes – are the first recorded document of Thompson live, solo, acoustic. Now that’s a thing he does so often but this was on the back of the Richard & Linda Thompson bust-up – so he was out there shopping the songs they’d written and performed together. Extraordinary player and writer. And some people tell you the voice is an acquired taste, or the weak ingredient or something. Not true. I think he’s a great singer. The richness, the expression. Anyway, this is a gem. And I was glad to find it.
