Alf, Stuck On Earth 12” (1987)
I loved Alf – the TV show. And so I purchased the 12” Stuck On Earth single released under his name. What a ridiculous thing to own. It was played a couple of times – and giggled at (as an 11 year old was wont to do at the time) and then it was forgotten; rediscovered a few years ago because the cover was amusing. What an obnoxious character Alf (b: Gordon Shumay) was – I mean really. A deeply unfunny character/show – but I really did love it. Years later I would find out that one of my favourite drummers (Vinnie Colaiuta) would play on the show’s theme. So I started watching bits of the show on YouTube – and found it far more rewarding when dubbed in Spanish. The 12” single has, rather ridiculously, been in my record crate the last three times I have done a DJ-set where I focus on songs from the 1980s that don’t get played at other eighties nights. I’m not saving face by saying that I’ve had it there really as a joke, something for punters to flip through if they were making requests and have a laugh at; a talking point. I’m not saving face by saying that – because last time I actually played it. It was every bit as horrific as you can imagine. And then some. And weirdly in the instrumental intro/build-up I found myself anticipating “Well my name is Alf and I’m stuck on earth/Can’t get back to my place of birth/Making the best of a bad situation/Think of it as an extended vacation”. I had to stop myself from mouthing along. I’m not actually entirely sure I managed that. Thanks a fucking lot Paul Fusco!
