Split Enz, Enz Of An Era (1982)
This was the first Split Enz album I heard; released to mark the band’s 10th anniversary, I put some pocket-money together with my brother and we bought it for our mum for (I think?) her 28th birthday. And now I have that record (that exact copy) in my collection. It was music the whole family enjoyed; we all liked it – and (presumably) for different reasons. I probably mostly liked it to begin with because the rest of the family did. It was – along with one or two other albums – the sound of my school holiday. I’d try to get a sleep-in and my mum always cranked up the records really loud so she could hear them while vacuuming. So I can still picture that (can’t help but not) when I drop the needle on the first and second sides of this album. Later, my folks would go to the Enz With A Bang Tour and I remember being really jealous that I could not go. I might have just turned eight years old. My bro and I were left with an uncle who couldn’t care less about going – he babysat us and our cousins. My aunty and the folks rocked along in Napier. I remember asking so many questions about the show. All because of this album. And I know there have been better, bigger compilations of Enz material since – but to this day this is my favourite. And to this day I still think so much of the best music made by Split Enz.
