John Lennon/Yoko Ono, Double Fantasy (1980)
I gave away my dad’s copy of this album – so had to buy another copy some years down the track. But this album was a staple growing up. The rule was that you skipped the tracks featuring Yoko Ono (far easier once the CD player came along). And you just focussed on the John Lennon material: his comeback – Woman, I’m Losing You, Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy) and of course Watching The Wheels – hands down my favourite Lennon song. Though those others are all pretty shithot too. It’s funny how your tastes change as the years go on, how you learn to shake off some of what your parents tell you. We never listened to country music growing up. It was, somewhat ironically perhaps, outlawed. And we never listened to Yoko Ono. Well, I love country music now, one of my favourite genres. And I also prefer a lot of the Yoko material here (now) to some of John’s. How about that?
