Mario Lanza, Selections from The Student Prince (1954)
I sometimes think it would be quite cool if you could still buy this sort of thing – a truncated version of the main album, an EP culled from the LP as it were; yes, yes, you can make this sort of a thing by only buying key tracks on your iTunes account, or by copying only certain ones into a playlist or whatever – but that’s that. I mean it would be cool to buy wee 45s that take the best four or five songs from a bigger project. Okay, so it’s a terrible idea financially – and probably why it was stopped. But still, I’d like to buy just half a dozen songs on vinyl sometimes, or even three or four, rather than the full album. Sometimes, too, it’s a way into the larger work. Anyway, I found this in a junk store very shortly after the first time I saw Heavenly Creatures. That was when I first heard – as far as I’m aware – the name Mario Lanza. It stuck with me from that film anyway. The music, the name. And so I happily added this to a bundle of junk-store purchases. You know, I’ve only just started actually listening to it recently. Kept it all these years as little more than a novelty; harmless prank. And I’ve found I like it – I mean, sure, I went on to hear other Lanza stuff (on CD) but this wee version of the larger work is pretty cool. A bargain too. Of course.
