Welcome to episode 52 of Sweetman Podcast brought to you by Phantom Billstickers. A chat with blogger/writer/author Emily Writes. In fact it’s a second chat, Emily is the first return-visitor to the podcast and if you wanted to catch up with her previous time, or revisit it yourself – it was way back at Episode 14. Then we talked about her roles and writing in establishing herself as a “Mummy Blogger” – some frustration around the term then. Now she openly embraces it, no issues, and no reason to – her writing and career has gone from strength to strength.
Our chat this time is largely around her fantastic debut collection, the book Rants In The Dark (a selection of her best blog posts). The book is pitched “from one tired mama to another” – in fact that’s the subtitle, it is a book for parents, about parenting, but it is not an advice book; no judgements there either. It’s filled with funny writing too. Good writing. Some sad stories too, some heartbreaking moments around frustration and illness and near-terminal tiredness..
Emily and I have known each other for quite a while now – we do our best (I think?) to not repeat too much from the previous podcast but we do talk a bit about our friendship, our relationship as writers, and the other big move for her in the last year has been as editor of Spinoff Parents so we talk a bit about that; the aims of that section and some of the ways she works.
There’s a lot in this and I hope you enjoy it…certainly Emily’s book is worth reading. And you can find her at Spinoff Parents where she does a lot of writing, as well as introducing posts by the other writers she’s chosen and edited.
You’ve found this via the link on Facebook or Twitter and/or from the Off The Tracks website – it’s hosted at Soundcloud and to receive the episodes before you even get tothese show notes you can subscribe on iTunes. Day-time visitors to the den get to have coffee thanks to L’affare or, later in the day, they can have a beer from the wonderful Yeastie Boys. My thanks as always to these great sponsors. And welcome aboard our new sponsor, T Leaf providing a range of herbal teas and infusions for me. And for podcast guests. Very excited about that. My thanks to T Leaf. And to our usual sponsors…
