Low Cost Culture
One of the saddest things about so many New Zealanders taking the music of Jack Johnson and John Mayer so seriously is that it’s created sad, little disciples, now somewhat desperately trucking out their own mediocre versions of this stunningly average material. Here with this EP Auckland-based Sam Allen, on opening track Already Taken, imagines a marriage between a Jack Johnson song and a John Mayer song. It’s sickly sweet and – you guessed it – fucking ghastly.
On to the second track, Assurance, and all that’s assured here is Sam Allen loves John Mayer, particularly the early, funny films.
Speaking of funny films, you imagine Assurance playing out in a dating-montage as part of a romantic comedy – not sure what that has to do with funny films, but there you go.
The EP’s cover has Allen’s face looking particularly grubby, well understandably, he’s had it shoved right up John Mayer’s ass for most of this EP.
Good lord this is awful.
I have a picture of Allen, and this is possibly unfair, but I imagine he’s shelved his Mayer and Johnson albums for the next 6-12 months and all he’s listening to is Low Cost Culture by Sam Allen. Well, fingers crossed, he’s the only one…
