Director: Amy Schumer
I’ve liked a lot of what Amy Schumer has done – the best episodes of her show offered some sharp sketches but it hasn’t always been great; she seemed to ride a wave of popularity after 10 years or so in the game but there has never been a consistency to her work. I liked her last special, but I didn’t really dig the movie Trainwreck at all.
This new Netflix special aims fairly low and sinks even further. It’s woeful – the real Trainwreck of her career to date.
We start with roughly half the special dedicated to sex jokes – nothing wrong with that, but for this one night stand Amy appears unprepared, she reaches down to unzip and there is no joke there. Wait, is it over there? Nope. A pause for laughter – and there’s practically none. That’s because there is nothing funny being said. No chance to spoil these one-liners then.
The sex stories are combined with an attempted happiness-announcement of having and holding onto a new boyfriend. Schumer’s greatest riffing has been around promiscuity – so whether you found that funny or not is irrelevant, but she’s closed off the supply. No jokes now.
The special is deeply awkward – and this has nothing to do with anything other than the lack of humour involved. It’s as if Amy Schumer has turned into Dane Cook. But it’s worse than that…because Schumer seemed to have something. No longer. Her career deserves to tank completely following this. Money needs to be refunded – for this does not deliver what it promises.
Embarrassing to watch. A brutal – wasted – hour listening to a recent comedy-superstar falling off that perch.
The accusations around joke-stealing were something nearly career-crushing and several comics jumped in to defend her.
Perhaps the real proof that Amy was a joke-stealer is right here with this profoundly unfunny comedy special.
Here, on her own, as writer/director/performer, and basking in the after-glory of fame’s ascendance she seems lost, sounds entitled and struggles to achieve any flow or focus let alone an arc; struggling under the weight of expectations perhaps, but certainly struggling. The end result is half-baked at best. Almost unbelievably bad.
